The Industrial Revolution has undoubtedly affected the environment. From pollution to global warming, the environment has taken on a lot of the burden for many of the advancements that humans have enjoyed.
Unfortunately, the manufacturing industry is one of the biggest contributors to the significant damages and hazards on the environment. Manufacturing companies are among the biggest producers of solid, liquid, and gaseous wastes that lead to huge levels of pollution.
Although many manufacturing companies still do not have policies and practices in place to reduce their negative impact on the environment, there are many who are taking the lead to a more sustainable and environment-friendly approach.
When it comes to beverage manufacturers, Coca Cola is among the biggest around the world. They have started taking on a more responsible environmental commitment by making water preservation, sustainable packaging, and energy and climate protection among their goals. Aside from efforts to encourage and promote recycling, they are developing environmentally friendly bottles and taking on various environmental initiatives.
McCormick & Company
Named as the 14th Most Sustainable Corporation, McCormick has a flavorful approach to their environmental commitment. Aside from providing their employees with tools that will help achieve their goals of carbon footprint reduction and greenhouse gases reduction, they take their initiatives beyond their company by working with farmers in producing higher quality crops and training them to use environmentally friendly best practices and technological tools. In addition to these, research from the well-known McCormick Science Institute are used to promote healthy eating and wellness programs.
Johnson & Johnson
One of the world’s biggest manufacturers of pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods, Johnson & Johnson has made a commitment to aim to reduce their absolute carbon emissions by as much as 80% and power all their facilities with renewable energy by 2050. Among the concrete and tangible steps they are making are installing wind turbines on their Cork Ireland properties, fuel cells on their California properties, and solar arrays on their Puerto Rico properties.
This multi-national German company specialising in adhesive technologies, beauty care, and laundry and home care have a solid sustainability strategy in place. They have set a 2030 target to make all their products and processes three times as efficient as they are today. This long-term sustainability strategy will result to a great reduction in the company’s environmental footprint.
As one of Brazil’s most popular brands of cosmetics and beauty products, Natura has taken big steps towards their environmental commitments. Their efforts have resulted to the company being awarded with their carbon neutral certification in 2007. This means that the company is making no net release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Although they are unable to totally eliminate their gas emissions, they were able to reduce it by 33%. Their remaining gas emissions were offset by their reforestation programs in Brazil and by investing in research and development of renewable energy.
Aside from this, they are implementing tailored solutions that aim to reduce their water footprint and they prioritize the use of sustainable materials in their products and packaging.
A growing number of companies in the manufacturing industry are also implementing their own policies and efforts in reducing their negative impact on the environment. Hopefully, the whole industry catches up soon.
